Healing has been part of my life since I was a young child. My dolls and teddybears were always sick or bandaged up. Not surprisingly, I joined the Red Cross at age eight and went on to train as a nurse. I trained first in orthopaedics, then general nursing, followed by occupational health.
My knowledge of orthopaedics and traditional fracture treatment with traction features in the Gaea Remembered series.
The Turn Inward
How I viewed healing changed dramatically due to my own health issues. I was experiencing severe abdominal pain, especially around my periods, which doctors failed to diagnose. In desperation, on a friend’s suggestion, I reluctantly visited a reflexologist—I had never been comfortable with anyone touching my feet. She suggested I had endometriosis. She was correct.
I became a passionate advocate for reflexology and ventured into other healing modalities that Western medicine had ignored or contradicted, despite thousands of years of proven effectiveness.
My endometriosis journey led me to train in psychology. My husband’s leukaemia diagnosis and death prompted me to study counselling, hypnotherapy and coaching. I preferred helping people move forward rather than excavating the past.
Two Books, One Purpose
It is probably not surprising that my first book, Beyond Hot and Crazy: A Radical Guide to Living Well with Menopause, emerged from my personal healing journey. I explored what I learnt about reclaiming health during my own transformation. I believed I was a non-fiction writer. But on a Hawaiian writing retreat, something unexpected happened. The Gaea Remembered series emerged—and with it came a different way to share healing wisdom.
You can read more about this turning point in “Birth of the Gaea Remembered Series.“
Even though I am now writing novels, I do not want them to be purely entertaining. I want to give my readers something they can use in their daily lives, as part of their own healing journey. Both my books carry this intention.
Beyond Hot and Crazy teaches through lived experience and practical wisdom for menopause and thriving in midlife. Daughter of the Solstice teaches through story, weaving ancient healing traditions into Monia’s awakening.
Monia’s Education as a Healer
Monia, the main protagonist in the Gaea Remembered series, becomes an expert healer. In Daughter of the Solstice, we follow her early education in healing. Her grandmother trains her first, followed by Nebet, her grandmother’s friend. She also receives wisdom from Amera, her deceased great-grandmother, a descendant from Leumaria, who speaks to her through telepathy and inner voices.
One of my favourite quotes captures what I believe healing truly is:
Monia shares herbal knowledge throughout the narrative—practices we can use in our daily lives today. I have developed a thriving herb garden and use herbs and spices extensively in my cooking since studying Ayurveda during the pandemic. Over the past couple of years, I have also made my own tinctures, vinegars and syrups with healing properties, foraged from local hedgerows. There is far more about Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine practices in Book 2.
Sound, Vibration and Space
Rasa, one of the twins who comes to train under Akhon the Magi, takes a different path suited to his constitution and becomes a metallurgist. He introduces Monia to sound healing through the use of copper bowls. Akhon mentions how certain spaces can heal after Kavi notices the stones vibrate at the Valley Temple of Khafre.
“Akhon watches her, observing her reactions. ‘If you wish to understand a place,’ he says, ‘listen for its tone. And notice your own in response.’ Monia opens her eyes. She understands now why some spaces can heal and others leave you feeling unsettled. Her thoughts move further: why certain words soothe and others wound, and why one person’s vibration affects those around them.”
Sound healing is explored further in upcoming books, including fascinating speculation on how sound may have been used to construct massive structures like the pyramids. Both threads—the practical and the mysterious—are woven through the series.
Emotional and Psychological Healing
The books also address psychological and emotional healing. Monia deals with grief from losing her parents and homeland. Her grandmother, without explanation, walks out of her life for a time. She navigates becoming a woman, emotional processing, meditation and contemplation. Themes of groundedness, embodiment and feminine wisdom weave through the narrative.
If we pause to listen and remember, we discover we can heal ourselves and become part of the healing of our beautiful planet Gaea.
